Stump Grinding

Reclaim Your Yard From Old Stumps

Left alone, a hardwood stump takes a decade or more to break down — and while it does, it sprouts suckers, invites carpenter ants and fungus, dulls your mower blades, and sits exactly where you wanted a garden bed. Grinding is the fast, clean fix: a carbide cutting wheel chews the stump into mulch several inches below the surface.

Our self-propelled grinder fits through standard gates, so backyard stumps are no problem. We grind the stump and the exposed surface roots, backfill the hole with the grindings, and haul away the excess if you'd like. Seed it or plant over it — the stump is gone for good.

FAQ

Stump Grinding Questions

  • How deep do you grind a stump?
    • Our standard grind is 6–12 inches below grade, which is plenty for lawn, flowers, and most landscaping. If you're planning to build or plant a new tree in the same spot, tell us — we can grind deeper.

  • Can I plant grass where the stump was?
    • Yes. Once the grindings settle (or are swapped for topsoil), the spot seeds over like any other patch of lawn. For new trees, we recommend planting a few feet off the old stump site.

  • What happens to the roots left underground?
    • They stop growing once the stump is gone and slowly decompose over several years. Grinding removes the part that sprouts and the part in your way — the deep roots cause no trouble as they break down.

  • How long does stump grinding take?
    • Most residential stumps take well under an hour on site. We can usually fold a grind into a removal job the same day, or schedule a standalone visit for existing stumps.
